What this is

Road rules abroad compares driving rules between countries, for people about to drive somewhere unfamiliar. It leads with what is different — which side of the road, speed limits, alcohol limits, what you must carry — because that is what catches travellers out.

How the data works

Every value is checked against an official source — a government transport ministry, a national police force, or a national automobile association — and shows the date it was checked, with a link to that source. Where we do not know a value, the page says so instead of guessing. A value not re-checked recently carries a visible warning.

The compiled dataset belongs to Road rules abroad. If you want to reuse it, email us — we are open to it.

Type

The site is set in Overpass and Overpass Mono — faces that grew out of US highway signage lettering — and Source Sans 3. All three are open fonts under the SIL Open Font License, served from this site with their licence texts alongside.
